Banana Blueberry Kale Smoothie

10433936_10154299955725085_1689335078677413053_n I've been seeing a holistic kinesiologist for a while now to help heal my inside. This all began when I saw my MD practitioner about an issue I was having with swollen glands and tonsillitis that seemed to happen every 3-6 months consistently. Since I don't want to resort to surgery, and having my tonsils taken out, I wanted to first heal my body holistically. After all this is my body's way of telling me something is not right and unbalanced.

Firstly, I began to work on my digestive system and was told to say aloud a healing mantra every day. This is supposed to allow me to allow myself to heal and move forward in my life. Because I have tension in my throat and jaw (from grinding my teeth at night), it also means that I'm not letting things go from my past. This mantra will hopefully heal all of that stress.

I also learned that when we get throat infections it's bacteria that is stuck in our throat that hasn't made its way to our digestive system to be broken down. So high quality probiotics, fermented foods like kimchi and kombucha, digestive enzymes before very single meal, healing mushroom tea, and a whole foods diet came into action.

Next step was to cleanse my liver of all the antibiotic residue leftover from the intense antibiotics I took to help heal my tonsillitis. My hormones are also out of whack, and my stress levels (that I've been trying to manage) have put stress on my adrenals, so I'm also working on cleansing those as well. Then after all this detoxifying I'll be put on a more manageable maintenance regime of just making sure my body stays balanced and I in effect won't get tonsillitis.

It's definitely been an interesting and unorthodox approach to healing, but that is what holistic medicine and health is all about. Taking a different approach to healing the underlying causes of your illnesses, and I for one wish I had looked into this before I began studying holistic health. Its an entirely new and beautiful world out there once you realize the earth and our bodies have provided us with the tools we need in order to heal ourselves, just with a little guidance and knowledge can we how to take action in healing our bodies.

Well, back to the smoothie. This entire story is because I told my kinesiologist about what I ate for breakfast, which was oatmeal mainly, and he said it might be hard for my body to digest fruits, maple syrup, and oatmeal all at once, and recommended for me to have fruit and veggie smoothies in the morning with some protein flakes added to it that he sold me. And I am open to suggestions and willing to try anything to make my body perform at its best.

That's what got my creative juices flowing to create a simple but yummy smoothie recipe. Granted, I had all of these ingredients fresh in my kitchen to work with too! ;)

One Serving

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 2 kale leaves
  • handful of blueberries
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp aloe detox or honey
  • 2 TBSP nutritional flakes or protein powder of your choice
  • 4 ice cubes

Blend ingredients together and enjoy!
